After the success of 2012s The Amazing Spider-Man it is no surprise that Sony wanted to green light a sequel. What was a surprise was that they made so many of the same mistakes that were made in Spider-Man 3 that ruined that franchise. Still haunted by the ghost of Captain Stacy, Peter breaks up with Gwen to try and keep her safe from Spider-Man’s enemies. At the same time his old friend Harry Osborn returns to New York following the death of his father Norman Osborn to discover he is suffering from the same disease that killed his father. That’s not all as Max Dillon has an accident at Oscorp after he falls into a tank full of electric eels and becomes Electro. If that’s not chaotic enough Peter begins to search for what happened to his parents. Harry wants Spider-Man’s blood, Electro wants revenge, Peter wants Gwen Stacy back and Paul Giamatti makes a cameo as the Rhino at the start and end of the film for some reason. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, Dane Dehaan, Colm Feore, Felicity Jones, Sally Field and Paul Giamatti.

So as you can see from the introduction this movie has way too many stories and plots happening throughout this 2 hour and 22 minute film. If you trimmed the fat and cut out certain story lines then you could have had a decent movie. The problem with having too many story lines, as outlined above, is you don’t develop enough interest or emotion in that part of the plot or even worse fans become disappointed with the false marketing, I am looking at you Rhino. I don’t think you could completely fix this movie by dropping some story lines though, since Electro is a terrible villain and we have seen a great Green Goblin story ten years prior.

The one saving grace for this film is how incredibly talented Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone are. They are both incredible actors with amazing on-screen chemistry, which was probably due to their real life relationship. Their story isn’t as strong as the first movie but their connection is. Gwen Stacy is a fantastic character that is smart, strong and likable. She is the best character of the movie and maybe even the reboot series. Compared to how Mary Jane was portrayed, Gwen Stacy is another hero of this story, and that is fantastic.

You are probably sick of me talking about this but I do believe the number of villains does play a massive part in the success of a comic book movie. Now The Amazing Spider-Man 2 not only had too many villains but no villains that you actually cared about. Electro was a terrible villain that did not fit in this movie at all, the Rhino was a marketing ploy to set up Sinister Six and while I love Dane Dehaan as an actor he was not a great Green Goblin. If they had picked one you could have created a stronger story though I don’t believe that much could be done to save Electro who was just ridiculous and raised more questions than he should.

Spoiler Warning

I will give the filmmakers credit for something that most comic book movies do not even attempt and that is kill the love interest. The night Gwen Stacy died is an iconic moment in the Spider-Man comics that was teased might happen in the movie but I never thought they would actually do it. It is rare for comic book movies to kill off main characters and if we go off Raimi’s trilogy she would have been saved at the last minute like Mary Jane was in every movie. It was a courageous move and I would have been interested to see the long-term effect her death would have had on Peter Parker and Spider-Man. Realistically they could have had the death occur at the start of the third act and show his change through the act into the finale of the movie.

Spoiler Warning Finished

You can look at this movie and see the potential for a great movie. There are some interesting story lines to be explored but over all it fell flat with a bad story, bad post production and even some studio involvement in the development of a Cinematic Universe. It is a shame that they did not get the chance to correct their mistakes but one positive that came out of this was the new Sony/ Marvel/ Disney deal that saw Tom Holland cast as Spider-Man and join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

I wouldn’t say it is a must see, especially when there are better Comic Book and Spider-Man movies out there but there are some positives in it. It is definitely better than Spider-Man 3.

  1. I really agree with what you wrote about Gwen Stacy. It did come as a bit of a shock if I am being honest, and was also totally unexpected. I really did not think that they would kill off a main character, that was really a big surprise. Ad for the movie itself, it wasn’t too bad, there were still some enjoyable scenes in it, but overall I have to say this really wasn’t one of the best Spider-man movies. As usual this was another great post 😀

    1. Thanks for the kind words. I was completely surprised when she actually died, especially they way she died. She was so popular as a film character. Plus in Raimi’s Spider-Man Peter always save Mary Jane before anything and would happen.
