Movie pundits often refer to January as the dumping ground for movies the studio doesn’t have much faith in. Fortunately, January is the month in which all the movies likely to nominated come out in Australia. I only got too review four movies this month but I left feeling positive about all of them which is something I haven’t been able to say after most months.
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
This movie was fantastic, as a fan of Martin McDonagh’s previous film In Bruges, I had really high expectations of this movie going in and I can say it exceeded my expectations. McDonagh uses his dark sense of humour to break through some of the tension without compromising the overall drama of the movie. It is a dark film, from it’s style of humour to it’s content down to the thematic issues surrounding law enforcement, but it is a film that is definitely worth watching.
The Shape of Water
If you are a lover of cinema or a fan of Guillermo Del Toro then do yourself a favour and experience The Shape Of Water on the big screen. Del Toro made this movie something that needs to be seen in the cinema to truly appreciate it. But it is more than just a spectacle; it is a beautiful romance, with odes to classic cinema and a relevant political message.
I, Tonya
Thanks to pop culture I had heard of Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding, but I did not know much of the story. I, Tonya is a documentary style film about the life of Tonya Harding, told from the perspective of Tonya and her people, which leads to a hilariously fascinating story. It also deals very heavily on the issues of domestic violence and aggressive forms of parenting that raise the question; like coal, do people become diamonds under immense pressure?
The Greatest Showman
We have seen movies like this plenty of times before, but what makes this movie stand out is the performances and the musical numbers. This soundtrack is incredible, it has been over a month since I saw it and I still listen to the soundtrack regularly. When you listen to it you are transported back to those moments in the movie. Is the movie perfect? no, but as a musical it is fantastic and is definitely worth seeing again. In fact I am booking tickets to the sing-along screening in a few weeks.
